Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry

Medical device is a sunrise industry in India, with double digit growth rate. Due to efforts of the government in the last decade in creating a suitable eco-system and incentivizing production of medical devices through PLI scheme, production of technology intensive medical devices such CT scan, MRI, C-arm etc. has started in India. However, as a nascent industry, the sector is facing following KEY challenges.

  • Dependence on imports still continues to be about 70%.
  • NO incentive of domestic manufacturing of key components/raw materials/accessories etc.
  • High cost towards clinical investigations.
  • Dearth of available industry ready trained manpower.
  • Limited awareness, knowledge sharing and lack of brand India promotion.

To address these issues, after series of consultations and two Med-tech Stackathons- a massive exercise involving about hundred manufacturers to identify industry issues and map value chains across eight medical device segments, Department of Pharmaceuticals has formulated a scheme for strengthening of medical device industry with following objectives:

  • To strengthen existing infrastructure by providing financial assistance to medical device clusters for creating Common Infrastructure Facilities, boosting domestic manufacturing capacity and improving cluster quality.
  • To support any national or state level Government or Private Institutions to establish or strengthen testing facilities for medical devices to support the arising needs of the Testing Laboratories for Medical Devices.
  • To promote Domestic production of Key Components, raw materials and accessories used in Manufacturing of medical devices and IVD industry.
  • Financial aid for clinical studies to encourage innovation.
  • Support the creation of a skilled workforce through vocational and Post-graduate training.
  • Support awareness campaigns, expo, and roadshows to promote India's medical device industry.

Through the advertisement published on 22 Dec 2024, Department of Pharmaceuticals invites applications from eligible applicants under the following sub-schemes under the Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry.

  • Marginal Investment Scheme for Reducing Import Dependence.
  • Medical Device Clinical Studies Support Scheme.
  • Capacity Building and Skill Development for Medical Devices (for Component B only).
